History
The contemporary incarnation of Aurora Marine Design builds on the legacy of the original company, Aurora Marine, which was founded in 1971 by Kevin Green in New Zealand. Under Green’s direction, the company developed high performance marine engines, propulsion systems and boats for offshore powerboat racing, and off-road and drag racing competitions. Green later leveraged Aurora’s expertise to establish the largest BMW Marine dealership in the United States.
By 1993, the company’s focus had shifted to providing research and development services for marine propulsion systems and equipment OEMs. Kevin’s son, Shaun Green, started the new company in San Diego, California, changing the name to Aurora Marine Design in 1997. Specializing in design, marine engineering and naval architecture, by 1996 Aurora had expanded into the super yacht industry, leading the construction of several custom mega yachts, production vessels and refit projects for client Sharp Design.
Within a few short years, the company had diversified to include the military and commercial markets, developing highly original experimental vessels and new technologies for General Dynamics, Titan Corporation, and L3 Communications. The Aurora team established close working relationships with the US Navy’s Office of Naval Research, ARINC and the Naval Warfare Center, while under contract with private companies.
Recognized for their hands-on experience in marine construction, sailing and craftsmanship, these value-added capabilities have allowed Aurora to successfully manage all aspects of major marine projects. Aurora Marine Design incorporated in 2001. In 2003, the company added owner representation and construction management services to its offerings. Today, Aurora Marine Design I actively involved in military and commercial projects, in addition to developing novel equipment for consumer applications.
